What is Physical Therapy?

divier

Physical therapy is the art and science of evaluating, diagnosing, and treating individuals of all ages who have medical problems or conditions that cause pain and/or limit function. Physical therapists look at the person as a whole, using the individual’s history along with a physical examination to determine a diagnosis. Keeping your individual goals in mind, they develop a treatment plan that will maximize your function.

We believe that functional movement is a vital part of health and wellness. Physical therapy also strives for prevention; to prevent certain conditions, surgeries, falls and disabilities.

Another important component is education.Your physical therapist will help you understand your body, therefore empowering you to achieve lasting health benefits long after you are finished with your physical therapy program.

While PTs are most well-known for treating musculoskeletal dysfunction, they also provide treatment for many neurological and cardiovascular conditions. In addition, APT provides specialty treatments in sports medicine, golf specific rehab, concussion management, vestibular rehab (vertigo treatments), and pediatrics.

Manual Therapy vs. Traditional Physical Therapy

While ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and hot or cold packs can be valuable aspects of treatment, manual therapy is a highly skilled treatment option specific to your condition. Manual therapists are interested in why a joint or muscle is not functioning properly and view exercise not as the main mode of recovery but as an important complement to manual therapy treatment.

We use manual therapy to decrease pain, increase range of motion, reduce inflammation, promote relaxation, improve soft tissue repair, flexibility, and/or stability, and improve function. Manual therapy involves hands on mobilization of joints or soft tissues with the purpose of regaining pain-free natural movement of the body.

Manual therapists assess the quality and quantity of movement at a specific joint or area of soft tissue. Once a deficit is found, the therapist will choose one or more specific hands-on techniques to correct the problem and restore proper function to the affected area.

Manual physical therapy provides effective pain relief for patients with acute or chronic pain. It is very effective in treating the cause of the problem and correcting your condition long-term, not just providing temporary relief of your symptoms.
